"GREATNESS" FROM THE GREAT AMERICAN SOULBOOK!
San Francisco, CA- "The Great American Soulbook" was the latest studio album that the mighty Tower Of Power put together. When it broke out a couple of years ago, it debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 40 Jazz Charts. Instead of TOP originals, bandleader Emilio Castillo did a couple of things differently. First of all, the CD, album, LP, whatever your generation called them, The Great American Soulbook was a compilation of "cover" songs released on the new (self-produced) Tower Of Power record label.
SAM MOORE, HUEY LEWIS, TOM JONES, JOSS STONE, THE LIST GOES ON!
The CD features guest appearances by Sam Moore, of Sam & Dave, who did a Wilson Pickett tune. Paying Sam the ultimate in compliments, Emilio told me, "Sam Moore is one of the greatest soul singers of all time." The incomparable Joss Stone did the female lead on two Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell tunes, Tom Jones sang lead on one cut, as did Huey Lewis. The tune I am bringing you for the October 2011 "Pedro's TOP Song Of The Month" is a late 1970's hit originally put on vinyl by the Tavares brothers entitled, "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel."
The band members that put this outstanding piece of work together were Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and vocals, Doc Kupka on the baritone sax, David Garibaldi on drums, bass king Rocco Prestia, trumpeter Mike Bogart and guitarist Mark Harper have since left the band, Roger Smith on keyboards and vocals, Tom Polizer on lead tenor sax, Adolpho Acosta on trumpet and vocals, with Larry Braggs all alone on lead vocals for this tune. I encourage you to order this CD from TowerOfPower.com for there are cuts that set the live crowds on fire like "Me & Mrs. Jones, Loveland," as well as the three-song James Brown medley, just to name a few. In other words, if you are a TOP fan and you don't have this one, you're missing out.
